Do you know what you own?

I lived in Los Angeles for ten years where we were always under threat from THE BIG ONE.

Raleigh might not have a hurricane come through like it did in the 80s, but your house could catch on fire, a tree could fall on it, etc. I am not trying to sound alarmist; but rather give you peace of mind by suggesting some preparation.

My real estate agent, Amy Shair (“Call Amy for your Shair of the market!”  Sorry, I love that and every time I see her name I have to say it!) sent me this wonderful Free Home Inventory site to help assist you in the process:

What can you do today to give yourself peace of mind and be prepared for an emergency?

Memories, light the corners of my mind….

The good news is that I don’t have audio on my site so you don’t have to hear me butcher Barbara Streisand.

When my grandmother died, my father and aunts were very generous to make sure each family member had something of my grandmother’s. I received a beautiful bedroom set she had as a child. It is almost one hundred years old! She had two small desks that are in my home office. In fact, my computer screen is on one of them. The rest is in my guest bedroom that provides a good night’s rest for friends and family.

I also received some dishes. These dishes had been sitting on a desk collecting dust for probably 50 years. They looked like something that they would have given in the oldie days when you signed up for a bank account.   After hearing Peter Walsh speak years ago in Pasadena, I was able to let go of the dishes.

They had originally been white (I think!) with daisies that were yellow, but now they were just gray and dingy. What Peter made me realize is that my giving the dishes away to someone who truly needed them I was honoring my grandmother in a way she would have valued. And when I gave them away I didn’t cry; I didn’t feel guilty like I was dishonoring her. I felt good and her memory didn’t disappear!

Remember, if you let go of stuff that you don’t treasure, you will not lose the memory of someone you love. What stuff can you let go of today?

Set up an area inside or outside and make a home for all of your gardening supplies.

Shelf. Consider a galvanized steel shelf on the back of the house or the side of the shed to store extra pots. Spray it with Rust-Oleum and it can
stay outside year round

Potting Bench to hang tools & twine.

Repurpose Bushel Baskets to carry your produce or weeds.

Repurpose pots & store soil & fertilizer for easier to use portions.

Galvanized metal buckets can be used to store bird seeds so the squirrels don’t get in!

Looking for something different to do this summer instead of the usual beach or mountains?  Organic farms across the country are offering haycations.  Enjoy yourself, get a workout and purchase things like homemade foods that you can savor instead of some trinket that will likely end up collecting dust?

Find a place that suits your needs:

Organizing for the Beach

With three children under 5, my sister in law asked me for some help in organizing what the kids would need for the beach.

I am a big fan of color coordinating for children. It makes it easier not only for the kids, but also the parents!  Get a big tote bag and coordinate towels, water bottles, toys.  The kids could only pack what fits in the tote.  We also reminded them that if they wanted to bring back seashells there would have to be room. It was easy to unpack and pack again.  Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses!

Here are some great eco-friendly options for the beach:

Green Kitchen Tips

Small ways you can be green in the kitchen!
•Buy spices and grains from bulk bins
•Use green cleaners
•Use BPA free plastics
•Get a water purifier and ditch plastic bottles
•Bring Your Own Shopping Bags.  Keep in your car.
•Reuse paper or plastic bags
•Avoid excess packaging. Buy large bottles of juice instead of boxes; get large sizes rather than individually wrapped ones (portion in reusable containers); and buy items in bulk.
•When you find yourself with boxes and plastic trays, recycle (if your recycler accepts).
•Avoid cans that cannot be recycled/reused: pressurized whipped cream and cooking-spray. Whip up cream fresh with your mixer, or use a product that comes in a recyclable container. Get some refillable metal or plastic oil sprayers from Misto or Pampered Chef.

Organizing Recipes

Recipes within Cookbooks
Mark the page with a Book Dart. Color-code  recipes you have tried from those you haven’t; by category; or for favorites. Whatever makes the most sense to you!

Make an index. Write the name you’re likely to remember; book/magazine it’s in; and  page number. File  alphabetically in a recipe box, dividing it into sections.

Single Recipes

Create a filing system. Sort recipes in labeled folders and keep in a file drawer or in an open-sided storage box . Or set up a three-ring binder with tab dividers and plastic page protectors.  Every time you add a recipe, eliminate one you have yet to try.

Buy a ready-made system like the Williams-Sonoma Recipe & Entertaining Journal (williams-sonoma.com).

Use recycled/green recipe cards;
