IF NOT, GET ORGANIZED!
The average American has between $2,500 and 5 K worth of perfectly usable stuff they aren’t using while carrying 10K+ in credit card debt!
Over 85% of couples say they argue about clutter and disorganization!
Depression can cause clutter in your house and clutter in your house can cause depression.
The average person loses 1-2 hours weekly from not being organized (trying to find car keys, permission slips, etc.)
Being disorganized can cause stress:
Having guests over becomes an embarrassment, or an event that takes all-day preparation.
Using your home for activities you enjoy becomes difficult without taking significant time to clear the space.
According to the principles of Feng Shui, clutter drains you of your positive energy. You can actually feel it.
If it is too much to do on your own, consider hiring a professional organizer to help you!

Repurpose:
Figure out how to repurpose an item. Get creative. Instead of buying a special plastic case for ornaments, I use a wine case with a divider to store them.
Do you have some mismatched dishes hanging around because you haven’t wanted to part with them? Use a pretty cup to hold your cotton balls or lay your make-up brushes on a plate on your vanity. Those plastic containers for curtains also make great storage units. They are clear and you can write with a sharpie on them. I use mine to store holiday lights and electrical cords.
Recycle:
When organizing, remember to recycle. Often times, people are unaware of recycling guidelines, or whether something can be recycled at all. Know your guidelines and local recycling centers. Consider setting up a recycling center in your home or business to make it as easy as possible.
Encourage the legislature to pass laws. There is a program that offers incentives to people who recycle in form of gift cards. www.recyclebank.com/
Rethink
Get into the habit of rethinking of why you buy something, how you use it, if you really need it. Modern conveniences & marketers have convinced us we need stuff we really don’t! Train your brain to rethink how you can begin to be green, become more green and spread your knowledge to others!
A huge thanks to fellow professional organizer Helen Sklov ( http://beorganizedco.com/) for pointing out this last R I kept referring to when she heard my teleclass on Eco-Organizing!

Want to de-clutter but remember all those great ideas? And save paper?
Use Evernote to save your ideas, things you see, and things you like. Then find them all on any computer or device you use. For free.
Also, here is a nifty product to help you stay organized without using paper.
http://www.greenoptions.com/products/cocoa-writeboard-dry-erase-desktop-writing-surface-with-fine-tip-dry-erase-marker-eraser-clear-1003 You can use it at home or on the go. You place templates beneath the transparent writing surface. The CD included with the Slate contains over 500 templates. They also have a desktop version that can cut down on clutter. You can jot down notes, to do’s, events, in one place.
What great idea do you have today?
Anxiety & Clutter

A friend sent me an article last year and it talked about how being disorganized can create anxiety, especially for highly sensitive people (which I consider myself to be) If you are feeling anxious it might be worth it to spend that half an hour getting organized, or at least putting everything into piles to help you remain calm.
The article http://health.msn.com/health-topics/depression/slideshow.aspx?cp-documentid=100241379&imageindex=6 :
Disorganized heaps of paper in your cube or on the kitchen counter can make you anxious. For some, “clutter is a reminder of things that should be getting done but aren’t,” says Elaine Aron, Ph.D., author of The Highly Sensitive Person. “It can make you feel like a failure.” For a quick fix, straighten up a few surfaces in your office or in the areas of the house where you spend the most time. “It’s when every bit of space is messy that it’s most disturbing,” says Aron. Don’t bother to organize unless you have a chunk of time. Instead, arrange papers, books, and other detritus of daily living in neat piles or store them in baskets. “Just the illusion of order is enough to ease the mind,” she says.
What one step can you take today to tackle clutter and ease your anxiety?

You might have stared the New Year off excited to get organized, but maybe are struggling now. Make it a daily habit to devote time to organizing and/or purging. When you feel stuck, remind yourself of what you are saving (money, time), creating (a peaceful or inspiring environment) and remember what being disorganization has cost you (increased stress & anxiety) in the past.
What one item or area could you organize today that would make a difference in your life?
