Sip Smart

  • Americans buy an estimated 29.8 billion plastic water bottles every year.
  • Nearly eight out of every 10 bottles will end up in a landfill.
  • It is estimated that the production of plastics accounts for 4 percent of the energy consumption in the U.S.

By making a simple switch to a BPA-free bottle will save you money & be better for the earth.  You can buy one for each family member in his or her favorite color.  (I recommend coordinating backpacks, school supplies, bath towels, toothbrushes, etc. for children).

Organizing Your Mind

January 6, 2011 by Julie Seibert

I take a holistic approach with organizing and suggest people start with their mind. This means living in the present and not spending time in fear and anxiety. I consider this an important step in getting inside and outside organized. These questions by Geneen Roth are written on a whiteboard in my office and when making a decision I reflect on these questions.

1. Does it lead me toward a fuller life or confine me?
2. Does it bring me closer to my heart or take me further away?
3. Does it open me or close me?
4. Does it allow me to trust myself further or does it make me frightened of myself?
5. Does it enlarge my life or does it make my life smaller?

What are your priorities for the year?

What do you need to say no to or change?

Holiday Lights for Less!

Watch your bills flatline and help the environment!

We  use an extraordinary amount of additional electricity during the holidays.  A 2003 study conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy determined that Americans consume about 2220 GWh of electricity each holiday season by using standard incandescent holiday lights -which is equivalent to all the energy used by Angola in one year.  The study concluded that a mere 20% switch by American households to LED Christmas lights would save 440 GWh (or 1/5th of electricity) during the holiday season.

You can purchase LED lights and recycle your old incandescents here:

To help organize your lights and/or extension cords re-use plastic curtain containers.  You can loosely wrap and store them.  Most are see through and easy to label with a sharpie!

Recycling Electronics!

DID YOU KNOW THAT?
In 2005, the EPA estimated that unwanted electronics represented 1.9 to 2.2 million tons. The majority of these products, about 1.5 to 1.9 million tons, were discarded in landfills with only 345,000 to 379,000 tons recycled.

Many people will be getting groovy new electronic gadgets during the Holiday season.  Don’t just pitch what is no longer “current”.  You have lots of options instead of tossing in the landfill.

Donate! Many charities would love computers, cameras, etc. What is old to you, might be new to them!  Also consider children’s homes and youth groups.  For computers: http://www.purpleelephant.org/

Freecycle! You post it here, not only will someone use it they will come and get it!

Recycle! www. econewonline.com makes it easy.  Step 1: Select the product to trade-in and describe its condition. Step 2: Ship your product with the prepaid shipping label provided. Step 3: Receive your reward card in the mail

Sell. Post on Craig’s List.  They will buy your new, used and broken electronics with free shipping.  More info:  http://www.buymytronics.com/
