Purge before the school year starts.  Here is a wonderful local resource where you can donate them.  If animals are stained, torn up, etc. then do not donate them.  I always tell people would you give it to a friend or family member?

For North Carolina residents: brandi_byers@yahoo.com

Currently accepting items: Gently used stuffed animals, new stuffed animals, gently used children’s books, new children’s books, gently used baby/children’s blankets, new baby/children’s blankets.

Organizing Gardening Stuff

Set up an area inside or outside and make a home for all of your gardening supplies.

Shelf. Consider a galvanized steel shelf on the back of the house or the side of the shed to store extra pots. Spray it with Rust-Oleum and it can
stay outside year round

Potting Bench to hang tools & twine.

Repurpose Bushel Baskets to carry your produce or weeds.

Repurpose pots & store soil & fertilizer for easier to use portions.

Galvanized metal buckets can be used to store bird seeds so the squirrels don’t get in!

All I am askin’ for is a little RESPECT!

In the September 2009  issue of O magazine Suze Orman talked about money and personal power. Her last point was about how you respect your possessions says a lot about how you respect yourself.

Suze talked about when she was wealthy she would throw her clothes into a pile each day because she was too lazy to hang them up and thus spent a ton on dry cleaning.  She felt it showed that she didn’t respect the money she worked so hard to earn. Now, her closets are “temples of organization.”

Sometimes a room becomes so overwhelming you don’t know where to start. That is where a professional organizer can come in and help.

Are you showing respect to those items you worked so hard to earn?

Isn’t that Groovy?

Get in the habit of leaving the “groovies”.  Instead, examine the item (shoes, clothes, containers, plastic items, etc.), notice how groovy it is and walk away.  The less stuff you have, the less to organize.
Pat yourself on the back and consider starting a fund when you don’t buy something and then treat yourself to a trip, experience, or etc. I had one client who when she didn’t buy shoes put the money in a jar to treat herself to a day at the spa.
If you like to shop, enlist your friends to help. Pick a word that makes you laugh or think and get into the groovy habit.

What groovy thing can you do today, baby?

Do you still use a phone book?

It is estimated that approximately 540 million phone books are delivered each year, and over 700,000 tons of phone books are thrown out every year.  Why not opt out of phone books and use one of the many terrific online local directories instead!  What a great way to declutter all those bulky phone books!

Learn how to stop receiving phone books via zip code; resources for online directories; and recycling information:

Breathe Easier

The pollution of the environment outside is a growing concern, but so too is the air we breathe inside our homes. On average we spend up to 90% of our time indoors, and statistics from the EPA state that indoor air pollution is often 6-12times worse than outside.  After decluttering for spring cleaning, consider going green with your cleaners.

Method cleaners are available at most stores and you can also make your own.  Be sure to read labels as some products are greenwashing and not as green as they can be. Here are some on line resources.

Sip Smart

  • Americans buy an estimated 29.8 billion plastic water bottles every year.
  • Nearly eight out of every 10 bottles will end up in a landfill.
  • It is estimated that the production of plastics accounts for 4 percent of the energy consumption in the U.S.

By making a simple switch to a BPA-free bottle will save you money & be better for the earth.  You can buy one for each family member in his or her favorite color.  (I recommend coordinating backpacks, school supplies, bath towels, toothbrushes, etc. for children).

Got Counter Clutter?

Those piles of papers, bills and statements cluttering kitchen/office/bathroom counters must go! Replace with a filing system organized by what makes sense to you and how you would retrieve.  Then use it!  by filing  stuff as it comes in, rather than letting them pile up. The important thing is to use a system that works for you and that you will use.

Close out your checkbook register at year-end and start a new one. File the register with  tax statements you will need for your tax return.

Keep insurance policies, wills/trusts, birth/marriage certificates, passports and other hard-to-replace documents in a fireproof safe box and a backup of financial records on your computer.

Use a safe deposit box at your bank to store  valuable and irreplaceable documents and items. Don’t keep your will here. At your death, the bank will seal off access to a safe deposit box until the court approves an order appointing a representative to oversee the opening. Consult with an attorney for further details. I am not an attorney nor do I play one on TV.
