Purge before the school year starts.  Here is a wonderful local resource where you can donate them.  If animals are stained, torn up, etc. then do not donate them.  I always tell people would you give it to a friend or family member?

For North Carolina residents: brandi_byers@yahoo.com

Currently accepting items: Gently used stuffed animals, new stuffed animals, gently used children’s books, new children’s books, gently used baby/children’s blankets, new baby/children’s blankets.

“Educational Researchers have long known that humans find it difficult if not impossible to learn bits and pieces of information that lack organization.”

National Association of Professional Organizer statistics

As the school year approaches, organization could be a key component to help your child succeed in school.   Is your child organized?  Are you?  What step can you take today toward that goal?

Is Disorganization Costing you Time with Family?

Consider these statistics:

• In 2008, 28% of Americans reported spending less time with family; compared with 11% in 2006.
• In the first half of the decade, people reported an average of 26 hours per month with family, dropping to 18 hours in 2008.
• Parents spend an average of 23% of free time scheduling and coordinating their children’s and family’s schedules
Has disorganization reduced the amount of time you spend with loved ones?  What ways could you get organized to save time?

Are you Organized for an Emergency?

I have to admit that while I lived in Los Angeles I was ill prepared for an earthquake. I know it was my way of saying this won’t happen to me. I lucked out and never lived there during a major earthquake, but Katrina taught me to quit being passive.

Be sure to keep important documents, contact numbers, and other vital information in a place where it can all be quickly accessed with backup copies stored in a separate location. Have cash and medications on hand as well. Also have on hand basics like candles, batteries, a radio, food and water.

In the event that you will need to evacuate your home, be sure to have a plan and all needed supplies. If you have pets, be sure to make arrangements for their safety as well with vet records, meds, etc.

Want to de-clutter but remember all those great ideas? And save paper?

Use Evernote to save your ideas, things you see, and things you like. Then find them all on any computer or device you use. For free.

Also, here is a nifty product to help you stay organized without using paper.

You can use it at home or on the go. You place templates beneath the transparent writing surface. The CD included with the Slate contains over 500 templates.

They also have a desktop version that can cut down on clutter. You can jot down notes, to do’s, events, in one place.

Memories, light the corners of my mind….

The good news is that I don’t have audio on my site so you don’t have to hear me butcher Barbara Streisand.

When my grandmother died, my father and aunts were very generous to make sure each family member had something of my grandmother’s. I received a beautiful bedroom set she had as a child. It is almost one hundred years old! She had two small desks that are in my home office. In fact, my computer screen is on one of them. The rest is in my guest bedroom that provides a good night’s rest for friends and family.

I also received some dishes. These dishes had been sitting on a desk collecting dust for probably 50 years. They looked like something that they would have given in the oldie days when you signed up for a bank account.   After hearing Peter Walsh speak years ago in Pasadena, I was able to let go of the dishes.

They had originally been white (I think!) with daisies that were yellow, but now they were just gray and dingy. What Peter made me realize is that my giving the dishes away to someone who truly needed them I was honoring my grandmother in a way she would have valued. And when I gave them away I didn’t cry; I didn’t feel guilty like I was dishonoring her. I felt good and her memory didn’t disappear!

Remember, if you let go of stuff that you don’t treasure, you will not lose the memory of someone you love. What stuff can you let go of today?

Set up an area inside or outside and make a home for all of your gardening supplies.

Shelf. Consider a galvanized steel shelf on the back of the house or the side of the shed to store extra pots. Spray it with Rust-Oleum and it can
stay outside year round

Potting Bench to hang tools & twine.

Repurpose Bushel Baskets to carry your produce or weeds.

Repurpose pots & store soil & fertilizer for easier to use portions.

Galvanized metal buckets can be used to store bird seeds so the squirrels don’t get in!

Organizing to Create a Space You Love

I went to do a consultation the other day. A woman was clearly embarrassed by her clutter. “Your place must be PERFECT!” I laughed and assured her it wasn’t.

To me, being organized isn’t about being perfect (impossible!) or having an environment so sparse and neat that people have to ask if they are allowed to sit on the couch. It is about creating a peaceful environment that you love and that honors the possessions you have. When I come home, I feel happy and relaxed. I also know if I need to find an important piece of paper I can do so quickly.

Like everyone else, I have to re-evaluate what I have set up, purge my closets, etc. There are days when I can’t tidy up every day and that is okay; I know I will be able to sooner rather than later.

So, remember, do not strive for perfection and beat yourself up. Strive to create an environment that you love, makes you joyful, inspires and brings you peace.
