“On Earth Hour hundreds of millions of people around the world will come together to call for action on climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. The movement symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in this fight, protecting our future and that of future generations. Living with a Disorganized Person

Take a deep breath and remember a few things when someone you love is driving you crazy with their disorganization:
They are not being disrespectful; like many things in life, it is not about you.
They have their own issue about clutter.  Let me emphasize again: this isn’t about you.
They might not be able to see the mess because they are focused on other things or in their mind it is organized.  We have all probably worked with someone whose office looks like a tornado went through it, but they know where everything is.
Many times there is a psychological reason for retaining clutter.  I had a client in LA who I was organizing her apartment.  We got through most of it but when we came to a wall in the living room she was very resistant.  We took a break and what she realized was she was creating a barrier to the crazy person who lived across from her in the next apartment.  She understood that the clutter was not going to make him leave her alone.  She took steps to deal with the person and regain her sense of peace.

Dealing with a Disorganized Spouse/Roommate/Co-worker

Here are a few thoughts if someone you live or work with is driving you crazy:
You can let it go. Love them anyway and pick up after them.
Change your attitude and just accept the ways things are.
Look to where they create piles and put storage there.
Remember:  you need to find out what it is costing THEM (not you!) to help motivate them to make changes.
Happy Monday.

Daily Routine: Get Organized!

Schedule a time for organizing in your daily routine, such as after the kids get home from school. Set your time for 10 minutes and work until the ding. If you are up for it, keep going, and if  not that is okay.  It is important to do daily.

Just 10 minutes a day will make a difference over a period of time when you get rid of things that no longer serve you (don’t forget to donate or recycle!) and organize and find a space for what you do love.

Two Easy Home Organizing Tips

Start small!

Start small such as piles on your desk or counter, the junk drawer or a drawer in your filing cabinet.   By starting small, you will achieve instant satisfaction and gain motivation to keep going.  Remember to ask yourself if what you are have been saving serves you and the life you want to create.

Create an “out the door quickly” station

Designate an official place where car keys, cell phones, sunglasses, lip gloss and whatever else is essential for you to grab on your way out the door.  Have the items have a home rather than creating a big pile.  Use baskets, hang a small shelf with hooks or repurpose a cake stand to hold these items.

Your receipts & business cards organized? Easy Solution!

If you are down to the wire on taxes (for me a month before is down to the wire!) here are two solutions.

Have too many business cards and receipts but not enough time? Just ship it all to Shoeboxed.com – receipts, business cards.  Shoeboxed also has exports so you can do whatever you need to with your info after it’s scanned. The service uses prepaid shipping to get your paper to them and they scan it and then send it back.  Easy way to deal with any paper mess!

BatchBook.com allows you to keep track of your business, personal, and social networking contacts and share them with the rest of your team. You can create a flexible, easy-to-use contact database from scratch, or import your contacts from an existing system. In addition to standard contact information, you can use SuperTags to create custom fields you’ve added yourself to capture the information that’s important to you.  Contacts tab offers a variety of filtering options and powerful batch actions so you can efficiently manage your network.

Repurposing Items to Get Organized

A few suggestions.  What are your favorites?

Milk Jugs/Containers -Cut off the tops and they become great containers for many rooms: utility, bathrooms, toy rooms, etc.

Vases – Vases can become decorative pen holders.

Nails – Hammer them a bit slanted into the wall and they become great tools for hanging belts, ties, scarves, etc.

Plastic Curtain containers - Smaller ones are great for storing small cables and plugs for ipods, phones, head phones etc. with a label on the outside. They can then be stored in a drawer or decorative box.

Glasses cases – No longer need that case for your glasses?  Use it as a pencil case instead!  They can also be a good travel jewelry case.

Oval Shaped Pencil Cases – School year over?  These cases make great cord carriers for power cords for laptop computers.

Shoeboxes – Use to store photos and divide groups of photos with colored index cards.

Cork Board – Take some extra material that matches your decor and cover cork board.  Put push pins in the board and hang your jewelry.
